Year 7 Maths Lesson 6: Substitution

Learning Objectives:
Substitution

Introduction:
What do pronumerals represent?
Please note in your books:
If a = 10, what does 3a = ?

3a
= 3 x a
= 3 x 10

Convention:
We write 5 lots of x as:
5x

We write 3 x (x + 1) as:
3(x + 1)

4ab is the way we write 4 x a x b

If a = 2 and b = 3, what does 4ab = ?

4ab
= 4 x a x b
= 4 x 2 x 3
= 8 x 3
= 24
