Learning Objectives:
Substitution (Recap)

Introduction:
What do pronumerals represent?
Please note in your books:
If a = 10, what does 3a = ?

3a
= 3 x a
= 3 x 10

Convention:
We write 5 lots of x as:
5x

We write 3 x (x + 1) as:
3(x + 1)

4ab is the way we write 4 x a x b

If a = 2 and b = 3, what does 4ab = ?

4ab
= 4 x a x b
= 4 x 2 x 3
= 8 x 3
= 24

If T = 4a - 2, what does T = ?

Use the following worksheet to conduct the class:

Algebra Charts

Use the Maths 300 software, Algebra Charts, to obtain the top scores from the students.

If students complete this, and the extension, direct them to bit.ly/algebraquiz. They won't understand all the work, but they'll have fun trying to find which questions they can answer.

Year 7 Maths Lesson 2: Algebra - Continued

Learning Objectives:
Introduction to algebra (continued)

Introduction:
Talk on expectations:
I wasn't happy with how things went last lesson.
I expect no discussion, outside of the task at hand, but I'd prefer if you asked me any questions you have.
We didn't get enough work done, and this is a very important topic.
I expect nobody to ask a question without putting up their hand.

Formulae:
What is a formula? (A way of mathematically writing a statement or rule)

Convert into a formula:
"Multiply each IN number by 10, then add 2"
"Add 14 then divide by 2"
"Add 12 to the IN number. This equals 3 IN numbers."

Learning Objectives:
Introduction to algebra

Introduction:
What is algebra? (Rules, operations, relations- language of mathematics)
What is a relationship? (Defining something in terms of something else- sister, mother, teacher, etc.)

Here's an example:

Use the rule: "Add 7 to each IN number to get each OUT number"

IN | OUT
3
27
10

Machine:
IN: | OUT:
2 | 4
5 | 10
13 | 26

IN: | OUT:
2 | 4
5 | 7
13 | 15

Year 8 Maths Lesson 3: Algebra - Like Terms

Learning Objectives:
Like terms
Reinforce algebraic terms

Introduction:
What is a term?
3a is the same as a+a+a
4a is the same as a+a+a+a
Therefore: 3a + 4a is the same as a+a+a+a+a+a+a

Are these like terms?
5t and 3t
2xy and 2x
6m2n + 4nm2

Steps:
1. Identify the pronumeral part of each term.
2. Are they the same? Then they can be combined.

Year 8 Maths Lesson 1: Algebra - Negative substitution

Learning Objectives:
Substitution with negatives
Reinforce algebra terminology

Introduction:
Substitution:
What does substitution mean?
What's a substitute teacher?

Explain: Use of brackets/multiplication for setting out
b = 3, c = 18
5b - 2c + c / b (expression)

a = -5, d = 9
(15/a) - (d/3)

b = -3, c = 2
3b2c + bc2 + 5

b = c + 1
5b - 2c + c / b
